What is the objective of the course? What is it?
What does it train you for?

SURPAVE responds to one of today’s greatest challenges: designing transport infrastructure that can keep pace with expanding cities, evolving mobility, and the urgent need for sustainability.

Roads, railways, and airports are no longer just built assets — they are complex systems that must be smart, resilient, and climate-ready.

SURPAVE is a two-year, fully international Joint Master’s programme designed to train highly skilled professionals who can design, manage, and transform transport infrastructure in a world shaped by climate change, digitalisation, and sustainability demands.

The programme goes beyond traditional pavement engineering, integrating advanced materials, life-cycle thinking, resilience, and digital tools into a single, future-oriented vision.

What truly sets SURPAVE apart is its strong international and interdisciplinary character.

Students study across at least four leading universities in Europe and beyond, collaborate closely with industry partners, and tackle real-world infrastructure challenges from the very beginning.

Graduates are trained to work in multicultural teams, across regulatory frameworks, and in close connection with the professional world.Developed with the support of the European Commission, SURPAVE also offers prestigious scholarships and stipends to outstanding students worldwide, making excellence in sustainable infrastructure education globally accessible.(info: surpave.eu)

What do you learn?

The programme equips you to become an engineer who understands materials, infrastructure, environment, digital tools, and decision-making as a single integrated system.

You are trained not only to solve today’s engineering problems, but also to anticipate tomorrow’s challenges — from carbon-neutral infrastructure to smart monitoring and circular economy strategies.

You begin by building a strong foundation in pavement analysis, materials testing, design methods, and project management.

From there, the programme expands your skillset through the SURPAVE specialisation tracks, allowing you to tailor your expertise in Smart Pavement Engineering, Sustainable Pavement Engineering, or Global Climate-Resilient Infrastructure, here You will learn how to work with advanced and sustainable materials, including recycled, bio-based, and multifunctional solutions; apply life-cycle thinking, circular economy principles, and environmental assessment tools; use data, artificial intelligence, digital monitoring systems to predict performance; and integrate resilience into infrastructure design, accounting for extreme weather, ageing, and uncertainty.

Beyond technical knowledge, you develop essential professional and research skills such as teamwork, communication, project leadership, and scientific thinking.

Through an industrial training project and a master’s dissertation, you apply your knowledge to real-world challenges, often in close collaboration with industry and research partners. (info: surpave.eu)

What can you do with it?

A SURPAVE degree opens doors — globally.

Graduates are prepared for high-impact careers in industry, public authorities, consultancy, and research, where expertise in sustainable and resilient infrastructure is increasingly essential.

The programme is built around real labour-market needs, ensuring that the knowledge and skills you acquire remain relevant long after graduation.

With SURPAVE, you can pursue careers as a transportation engineer, materials and sustainability specialist, infrastructure manager, smart infrastructure and digitalisation expert, airport and railway engineer, consultant for climate-resilient and circular infrastructure, or researcher in academic or industrial R&D environments.

Graduates are qualified to work with road agencies and public authorities, engineering and construction companies, materials producers and technology providers, consulting firms, asset-management companies, universities, research centres, and international organisations.

As a Joint and Erasmus-oriented Master’s programme, SURPAVE also offers a strong advantage for those wishing to continue with a PhD or advanced research career.

Employers and institutions value the programme’s international mobility, interdisciplinary training, and close connection with industry.

Most importantly, SURPAVE prepares you for a career with purpose.

You won’t just build roads — you’ll help shape safer, smarter, and more sustainable mobility systems for communities around the world.
